Information Technology is concerned with the use of technology in managing and processing information, especially in large organizations. In particular, IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information. In recent times information has been developing into a critical resource at different levels of our life particularly in research and development, education in all its entirety, industry, economics and even everyday household activity. Apart from this, information in a more profound way, is acting as a driving force in many areas of human activity and consequently demands exclusive attention. Side by side industrial society is undergoing a phase transformation.
A digital revolution is triggering structural changes comparable only to the last century’s industrial revolution. The process is irreversible and will eventually lead to knowledge based economy. Already the definition of electronic commerce is getting enlarged to support social system infrastructure, a complex two-way communication built an ensuing convergence of technologies and applications to integrate business, consumers and society at large as well as service sector and government.
While software in India has done well in the recent past, there has been a growing perception that to maintain the competitive edge globally, there is need to have focused programme to enlarge and improve the quality of human resources related to higher level of computer, software and communication expertise, system managers and project leaders. Fusion of digital communication, consumer electronics and computer technologies necessitates the engineering graduates new skills and theoretical background which are not being offered in the traditional discipline. Information Technology is the fastest growing segment of Indian industry both in terms of production and exports.
Today, the electronics industry is completely delicensed with the exception of aerospace and defence electronics, and alongwith the liberalization in foreign investment and export-import policies of the entire economy, this sector is attracting considerable interest not only as a vast market but also as potential production base by international companies. In recent times, ‘software development and IT enabled services’ have emerged as a niche opportunity for India in the global context. The Government is taking all necessary steps to make India, a Global Information Technology Superpower and a front-runner in the age of Information Revolution. The Government has announced promotion of Information Technology as one of the five top priorities of the country and constituted a National Task Force on Information Technology and Software Development.
